April sunshine

Image
The sun has been shining the last few days.  It feels like spring is finally here!  We've been busy in the garden, it's so overgrown.  There has been plenty of rain and mild weather from autumn through winter and it shows.  Springy, green branches are reaching high, seeking the warmth of the sun.  We've been cutting back, digging and planting.  It's only a small garden, but there's so much to do!  I call it my little 'pizza slice', because of its shape.  Yesterday I finally put some mangetout and beans in the ground.  Boy helped me and we built a new defence against the slugs.  A few years ago we built an  elaborate slug defence system , but they still grated our seedlings down to the ground within days.  So there was great excitement this morning that the beans were still there, no holes in the leaves!  This time we scattered dried cypress needles all around the little plants, fingers crossed.  The rhubarb however...

Slug & snail control - Slakken...

My big frustration: slugs and snails - brown, beige, bright orange, stripy and speckled, long, fat, shiny and slimy,... so...

Sand Bay & wild flowers

Image
There is some sand at Sand Bay.  I'm sure O would have appreciated us taking him to the sand, but he didn't know it was there.  Instead we left the bay behind us and walked up the steep steps to a path leading all the way 'in to the sea'.  I'm still amazed at the stamina my little man has, he's never been a 'buggy baby'.  It was a sunny and warm afternoon with an invigorating sea breeze clearing our heads.  The views just amazing, what a surprising and beautiful country this is.  At the top (or the end) we sat down for a bit, with a can of coke, just admiring the world around us.  What a way to spend a late afternoon - a mini holiday for the mind.  I love discovering these gems so near to us! On that walk I realised I really don't know enough about the wild flowers dotted along the path and growing between the rocks in the salty air and soil.  Some are probably just weeds, but who decides on whether s...

Claiming back a bit of life

Maybe a little strange to have them on the table in the winter, but never mind.  It snowed a little yesterday, enough to cover the grass with a little white blanket.  I long for the garden to get some colour back and the brightness of the spring sun...
